Timothy Ray Brown, an American who has been living in Germany, has apparently become the first person to be cured of the HIV virus.

Brown, who had been suffering from leukemia, was rid of the virus after receiving chemotherapy and a subsequent stem cell transplant, DailyTech reported Tuesday. 

Brown was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2007 and underwent a lengthy course of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Years of treatment unexpectedly left him blind, but apparently cured him of HIV.

His medical team found that the transplanted stem cells had come from a donor carrying a rare gene mutation that is resistant to the HIV virus. According to the report, approximately one percent of Caucasians in Northern and Western Europe have a special mutation that makes them virtually immune from infection.

The results of Brown’s treatment have been published in a number of medical journals including Blood and The New England Journal of Medicine.

치료 결과는 "Blood" 와 "New England Journal of Medicine" 등 의학 저널에 게재됐다.
